December Book Club Selection: The Stupidest Angel

The Stupidest Angel: A Heartwarming Tale of Christmas Terror
By Christopher Moore

Reviewed by Dom

Christopher Moore books are not for everyone, that’s for sure. Some people are offended by his take on certain subjects, and some just don’t share his particular sense of humor.

His work resonates with me, though. I list his most famous title, Lamb, in my top five of favorite books ever. One of the characters from that book, the archangel Raziel, makes a return visit as the titular character in this month’s book club selection.

In fact, fans of Christopher Moore will find several characters popping up from some of his earlier work. Moore returns to the fictional town of Pine Cove, California, and brings along some familiar folks, putting them in new situations.

One of those involves a woman, Lena Marques, who offs her ex, Dale Pearson, with a shovel . . . but the deed is witnessed by 7-year-old Josh Barker. What makes it worse, Dale happened to be wearing a Santa suit from his lodge, so little Josh is convinced that Santa has been knocked off.

So what does Josh do? He asks for one Christmas wish: to get Santa back.

Enter poor Raziel, who is able to grant this one wish. The problem is, Dale isn’t the only stiff brought back from the grave. You can imagine how the good people of Pine Cove react to that.

If you’re looking for a quirky, funny Christmas read, we’ve got the book for you. If you’re a bit more traditional about your holiday reading, perhaps you should dig out The Gift of the Magi.

As always, our Dom and Jane Book Club selection is available at all three locations of The Tattered Cover Book Store. Just be sure to mention the D&J Book Club when you check out, and you’ll get The Stupidest Angel for 20 percent off.

Merry (eerie) Christmas!
