“Help, Thanks, Wow: The Three Essential Prayers” by Anne Lamott
--reviewed by Jane
I am not a religious person. Let’s just get that out of the way right off the bat. I just want you to know where I’m coming from and if that colors your perception, so be it.
Having said that, I have read all of Anne Lamott’s books on her religious journey and I’ve loved all of them. Actually, I’ll read anything that she writes because I love her. She is one of the most honest humans on the planet.
This is a short, but very powerful book. I’ve read it 3 times so far and it’s one that I will pull out every time I need some perspective. Anne and I share a tendency to over-worry, over-think and over-feel life on planet Earth and this little book reminds me that everyone suffers the same human condition. We all have to be reminded that we’re not able to control every situation.
We also need to be reminded that we need to show some grace and gratitude. Life is painful and glorious and puzzling and disappointing and exhausting. We need help and maybe that help is as simple as turning it over to a higher power, whether that is God or the cosmos.
If you’ve never read Anne Lamott, this is a great introduction. Short, concise, fabulous. If you feel like you need a little handbook to help you keep your perspective, this is the one. Buy it, read it, wear it out.
