Book Club for July: Unbroken

You think you’ve had a bad day. You were late for work, one of your kids is sick, and the boss just moved a deadline up by two weeks. You’re aggravated and angry, and life just isn’t fair.

You need to read Unbroken. You need to read it immediately.

I’d read Laura Hillenbrand’s first hit book, Seabiscuit, so I knew she could tell a tale that made you feel like you were right there. With Unbroken, you’ll have the same feeling . . . which, during much of the book, is chilling.

This is the true story of Louie Zamperini, a juvenile delinquent who got his act together in order to become one of the world’s most successful runners. He competed in the ’36 Olympics in Berlin, and was considered by many to be the person who would eventually break the four-minute-mile barrier.

Until World War II broke out, and Louie went from runner to bombardier, joining the Army Air Corps. During a rescue mission in May of 1943, Louie’s plane went down in the Pacific Ocean. He and a fellow crew member spent 47 days drifting in shark-infested waters.

And that, my friend, is only the beginning. Things actually got worse.

The most intense scenes in Unbroken take place in some of the most brutal Japanese prisoner of war camps. Louie is pushed to the brink, most notably at the hands of a sadistic monster named Corp. Mutsuhiro Watanabe.

And yet Zamperini will not give up. He refuses to let Watanabe - or anyone - break his spirit or rob him of his humanity.

So you’ve had a bad day? Pick up Unbroken, our Dom and Jane Book Club selection for July, and just compare your day with Louie’s. Sometimes a book like this is exactly what we need to put life into perspective, right?

You’ll find it for 20% off at all three locations of The Tattered Cover Book Store. It’s a great summer read . . . unless you’re near the ocean.

Gave me the chills
Hi Dom & Jane! I've been wanting to read this book for a while now and hearing you put this as your July book of the month gave me the push I needed. I bought the book and while in the check out line the lady in front of me told me Louis Zamperini just died that day, July 2nd. I didn't know if you knew that, but it gave me the chills that the day I decided to finally buy the book is the day he died!

Can't wait
I am not a big reader, but I heard you guys talking about this book and then a few days later I heard you mention Louie Zamperini had passed and I immediately teared up. It just really had an impact on me. I picked up the book today and can't wait to read it. Thanks Dom and Jane!
