When You Are Engulfed in Flames
By David Sedaris

Reviewed by Dom

One of the undisputed masters of the memoir, David Sedaris has built a rabid following by talking about himself - which sounds odd to some people, but is generally the recipe for the best humor. We're suckers for funny first-person stories.

This isn't a novel, nor is it a collection of short stories; it's an escape through the mind of an award-winning humorist. Sedaris is best known for the pieces he has contributed to Esquire and The New Yorker, as well as stints on NPR.

But it's the books that have cemented his fame. The Dom and Jane Book Club has featured a couple of his other titles over the years (Me Talk Pretty One Day is perhaps the most popular), and it's natural for people to compare them to each other. When you're as good as Sedaris, that can be tough, because the bar has been set high.

Tales such as "Solution to Saturday's Puzzle" will resonate with frequent air travelers, while "The Smoking Section" is sure to get nods from anyone who has tried to quit smoking.

Please be aware that language and adult issues/situations will not appeal to everyone. But Sedaris has a way of eliciting a chuckle or two - or outright guffaw - from most of us.

When You Are Engulfed in Flames is available for 20% off at all three locations of The Tattered Cover Book Store. Just let them know you're there with The Dom and Jane Book Club to snag the discount.

And thanks!

Another week, another story about how our food is killing us. This time it's artificial sweeteners (again). I know, I know, but the scientists insist on taking away all our fun. The story is in the link below.

And when you feel really sick, but you still drag your carcass into work, you know what you're doing? You're infecting everyone else. A new study shows just how fast your flu virus is racing around the office - and it's not pretty. Details in the link.

Plus, a new formula for being productive - based on how long you work at one stretch followed by a specific break time - and the video of the week: a robot cheetah. Yes!

Follow this digital path for all the stories, and prepare to get your nerd on!

One of our favorites, Amanda from Le Peep, brought us a delicious breakfast for LAF. She spoiled us with burritos and Bananas Foster and pig! Head into Le Peep in October to support Breast Cancer Awareness AND enjoy some pancakes! When you order the Strawberry Cheesecake Pancakes, half of all sales from all orders will go to the National Breast Cancer Fund. We love our breakfast here on The Dom and Jane Show, so trust us when we say Le Peep is good for a big YUM.

Kate and William are about to have another royal child - hip hip hooray! - and so science once again looks at the effect of birth order on personality and such. I've got your details in the link below.

Also, how many MicroLives did you add to your lifespan by eating your broccoli last night? Wait - what's a MicroLife? It's a funky new stat, that's what, and it helps you to figure out just how bad - or how good - you're treating your body.

Plus, the science behind Angry Face, and how to choose gym clothes that will be less stinky. Important, right?

All of it is patiently waiting for you down this digital path, so get on it. It's time to get your nerd on!

Suppose you’ve got a hankerin’ for a nimble, stylish sports car, but you want to spend less than $30k. I mean, you still want good performance and, since it’s a sports car, you want something that will smoke through the turns on winding roads in the foothills.

Subaru comes to the rescue.

I spent a week tooling around in the 2015 BRZ, and found it to be one of the best times I’ve ever had with only four cylinders.

You're getting sleepy in the afternoon, and you wonder: Should I take a nap or just drink some coffee? It turns out that the answer is: Both. They call it a coffee nap, and it could be just what you need. Details are in the link below.

And which memories do you think are the most powerful for you? Your trip to Hawaii, or the music playlist you created three months ago? You're gonna be surprised.

The rest of News For Nerds covers learning a second language, and how to keep your tan during the winter.

It's all good stuff, and you can dive in by following this underlined link thing. Go on, get your nerd on!

The Princess Bride
By William Goldman
Reviewed by Dom

Okay, so you've probably seen the movie - which is easily one of the top ten greatest movies of all-time, as noted by esteemed movie critic Dom Testa - but to not read the book would be INCONCEIVABLE!

First things first: You'll see that Goldman allegedly adapted this story from the original "by S. Morgenstern." Uh, sorry kids, there was no S. Morgenstern; it's just part of the fantasy, and part of Goldman's wry, brilliant feel for comedy.

The book is, however, filled with more detail than you'll find in the Rob Reiner film. But it's still a heavy dose of fencing, fighting, heroes, villains, chases, pirates, giants, and kissing. Not necessarily in that order.

What I love the most about this book is the way it spoofs classic adventure tales (think Three Musketeers or Robin Hood) with a wink to the reader. It's like we've all agreed to play along and enjoy the ride.

Will the farm boy, Westley, posing as the Dread Pirate Roberts, win back his beautiful Buttercup from the heinous Prince Humperdinck? Will Inigo Montoya ever find the six-fingered man? Will Count Rugen succeed where Vizzini failed?

Will we stop laughing? No. It's too much fun.

Some will say that this is "a kid's book." Don't listen to them. The Princess Bride is something that Jerry Seinfeld claimed was a myth: Fun for the whole family.

And the book can be found for 20% off at all three locations of The Tattered Cover Book Store. Just stop in and ask for The Dom and Jane Book Club. Enjoy!

What would you think if middle school and high school started at 9 or 9:30? What? You don't like that idea? It messes with your schedule? It would be inconvenient for you? Well, it's actually MUCH better for your kids. Now what do you say? I've got the story in the link below.

Also, we only THINK we hate waiting. It turns out that sometimes it's good for us, and not all waiting is the same. Interesting story, and you'll find it in the link down there.

Plus, the reasons why you lose friends as you age, how monkeys don't own any selfies that they take, and video of a robot riding a hovercraft. I mean, how could it get any better than this?

Follow this digital pathway and you'll be quickly getting your nerd on. And you'll thank me.

Think you're addicted to coffee? Gotta have it every morning, right? Otherwise you're useless. Well, what if it's not the coffee that you're hooked on, but the routine of making it? Cool stuff, and I've got details in the link below.

Plus, science is always trying to come up with new ways for personal identification. Forget about retina scans - how about a device that recognizes your body odor? Or your veins? Think I'm kidding? I'm not. The story is in the link below.

And some other cool things this week: How Twitter helped to identify restaurants that served up food poisoning, how to get by on the pitiful amount of sleep you're getting, and a gigantic fart machine that will make you laugh - unless you have no soul whatsoever.

Check it all out by tripping down this digital pathway, and get ready to get your nerd on.

Hollywood has funny ideas about what happens when you step outside the Millennium Falcon without your helmet. But, alas, Hollywood usually gets it wrong. No, you won't explode, but it's still incredibly unpleasant. Want the deets? I've got 'em for you in the link below.

The movie Jaws started our real fascination with sharks, and Shark Week on television owes its ratings success to fear. But how many people actually die from shark attacks? And would you believe there are at least half-a-dozen other things in the ocean that are MUCH deadlier than sharks? See that link below for a fun video about it.

Plus, cat lovers have a new reason to strut: something in cat poop might help cancer patients. I also have a story about vibrating shoes that will help you find your way around town.

News For Nerds is really for all the cool kids. If you wanna get your nerd on, just follow this digital link and share it with your friends, yo.
