The Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Weisburger
Reviewed by Jane.

I have to say that “The Devil Wears Prada” is one of my favorite movies.  I thought Meryl Streep was BRILLIANT.  Now that I’ve read the book, I like her portrayal even more!

The book is written in first person and is a novelization of Lauren Weisburger’s time as the assistant to one of the top magazine editors in the country, possibly the world.  She worked for Vogue’s Anna Wintour and so it’s assumed that the book is a thinly veiled memoir.

Andrea had just finished college and had aspirations to be a writer.  She began looking for jobs at magazines in New York, when she stumbled into the job as an assistant to a very famous and very difficult editor of a top fashion magazine.

She lands the job, even though she has no knowledge of or interest in fashion and everyone she talks to tells her that “a million girls would kill for that job”.  So, she accepts and the torture begins.

Her boss, Miranda is persnickety, condescending, brutal, dismissive, narcissistic, shallow and extremely successful and influential.  In short, she is impossible to deal with.

Andrea finds that this ‘great opportunity’ is grinding her down from exhaustion and ruining all of her personal relationships, so what to do?  Well, that’s why you need to read the book.

Even if you’ve seen the movie, read the book.  There are some differences in the storyline and it’s a fast mover.  You can pick it up at any Tattered Cover Bookstore through the end of August.
