Careers in Radio Broadcasting

Do you enjoy listening to the radio? Do you wonder how it all flows?  The radio business is diverse career wonderland offering everything from On Air careers, behind-the-scenes careers, and administrative support careers. 

On-Air Careers
  • Radio announcers are referred to as disc jockeys; they play recorded music on radio stations. Many morning shows are funny and entertaining for listeners.
  • Traffic Reporters report current traffic conditions. They gather information from state and local services including police and fire sources.
  • Voiceover Talent record written material for commercials, narratives and more for radio, television and other mediums.

Sales Careers
  • Market Manager directs day to day operations of the station cluster.  The most significant portion of their role is to drive and manage sales efforts.
  • Local Sales Managers are in charge of their sales team.  Each sales manager has their own book of business as well.
  • Account Executives promote the station and sell adverting packages to parties that could benefit from reaching a radio audience.

Administrative and Support Careers
  • Commercial Traffic directors are in charge of managing the commercial logs, manage commercial inventory  ensuring all advertisers spots run timely and accurately   

Behind-the-Scenes Careers
  • Producers plan and develop live or taped productions, determining how the show will look and sound. They select the script, talent, sets, props, lighting, and other production elements.
  • Assistant producers provide support and background research; assist with the preparation of musical, written, and visual materials; and time productions.
  • Web site or Internet producers plan and develop Internet sites that provide news updates, program schedules, and information about popular shows.
  • Program directors are in charge of on-air programming in radio stations. Program directors decide what type of music will be played and supervise on-air personnel.
  • Audio and video equipment technicians operate equipment to regulate the volume, sound quality, brightness, contrast, and visual quality of a broadcast.
  • Master control engineers ensure that all of the radio station’s scheduled programs are smoothly transmitted.
