Billie Eilish recalled experiencing a “dark episode” before writing “What Was I Made For?” during her acceptance speech at the Palm Springs Film Awards.
Released last July as a part of the fantasy comedy film Barbie soundtrack, “What Was I Made For?” was commercially successful worldwide. The song won the Chairman’s Award at the Palm Springs Film Festival.
In her speech after accepting the award from Barbie filmmaker Greta Gerwig, Eilish spoke of the difficulties she faced before writing the song.
Eilish recalled that she “was in a dark episode and things didn’t make sense in life” at the time she was approached to write the song.
“I just didn’t understand what the point was and why you would keep going. [I was] questioning everything in the world,” Eilish said, accompanied by her brother and co-writer of the song Finneas O’Connell at the podium inside the Palm Springs Convention Center.
The superstar singer added that she thinks that “this movie is the most incredible, most empowering and beautiful and funny and just unbelievable piece of art in the world, and I’m so honored to be a part of it.”
She dedicated the award to “anyone who experiences hopelessness, the feeling of existential dread.”
Finneas focused his speech on mother Maggie Baird and father Patrick O’Connell.
