Dua Lipa Granted Albanian Citizenship

Albania’s President Bajram Begaj granted citizenship to pop sensation Dua Lipa on Sunday (November 27) for promoting the country through her music and fame.

Begaj said he considered it an honor to do so because Lipa has made Albanians famous throughout the world.

“Happy to give the one and only Dua Lipa the decree of Albanian citizenship,” he said. “She has made us proud with her global career and engagement in important social causes.”

“I will be an Albanian with papers too,” Lipa, who was born in London to immigrant Albanian parents Anesa and Dukagin Lipa, said before taking her citizenship oath at Tirana city hall.

“It is an indescribable great joy with such acceptance, love and everything,” said Lipa, who shared a series of photos and videos from the ceremony to document the big moment.

“Thank you President Bajram Begaj and Mayor @erionveliaj for this honour ~ got my Albanian citizenship!!” she captioned her Instagram post.

Lipa started to post her songs on YouTube when she was 14 and released her debut studio album in 2017. She won the Grammy Award for best new artist in 2019.

Lipa and her father Dukagin co-founded the Sunny Hill Foundation in 2016 to raise funds with annual concerts held in Kosovo to help people experiencing financial difficulties.
