Lil Nas X Drops Highly-Teased New Single ‘J Christ’

Lil Nas X released “J Christ,” his first new track in two years since “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” on Friday (January 12).

The accompanying video shows the rapper spoof various Biblical tales and play a basketball game against the devil.

“Is he up to somethin’ only I-I know?/ Is he ’bout to hit ’em with the high-igh note/ Is he ’bout to give ’em something vi-iral,” Lil Nas sings in the slick chorus, before later declaring that “B-h, I’m back like J Christ.”

Lil Nas X co-wrote “J Christ” with Omer Fedi, Mike Levy [Gesaffelstein], and Blake Slatkin, and co-produced it with Fedi and Gesaffelstein.

Lil Nas X teased “J Christ” earlier in the week, writing that the song “i s dedicated to the man who had the greatest comeback of all time.” He also shared the single artwork, featuring himself dressed as Jesus Christ on the cross.

“As for those doubting which direction Lil Nas X has chosen, he proudly proclaims ‘THIS WAY’, choosing to express his spirituality in his own way. He’s forging a new life for himself while nodding to the journey that led him here, complete with homag e to his iconic music video for ‘MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name)’. Nas has ultimately ushered in a new beginning, and we have now arrived at DAY ZERO of this chapter,” says a press release about the visual.

The rapper who was severely criticized for his use of religious iconography, with comments such as he was “mocking” and “disrespecting” Christianity, responded by tweeting, “Jesus’s image is used throughout history in people’s art all over the world. I’m not making fun of shit. yall just gotta stop trying to gatekeep a religion that was here before any of us were even born. stfu.”
