Lil Nas X Opens Up About Success Of ‘Montero (Call Me By Your Name)’

Rapper Lil Nas X appeared in the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, in which he spoke to Ira Madison III about his latest success, “Montero (Call Me by Your Name).”

Released in late March, the new single has received worldwide acclaim and fandom, rising up the Billboard Hot 100 chart to earn the singer his second-ever No. 1 hit.

With “Montero,” Nas admitted to having aimed to subvert expectations by releasing a song that sounded nothing like its predecessor, “Old Town Road,” thereby avoiding the title of a one-hit-wonder.

“I’m thankful. But it also feels good to prove people wrong. It’s one of my driving forces,” the 22-year-old said.

At first, Nas shared, he feared that “Montero,” which openly delves into the subject of gay sex, would alienate many of his straight fans.

“But then it was kind of like, if they feel offended, they were never really here for me,” he added. “They were here for whatever version of myself they made up in their head.”
