Lizzo criticized Texas’ anti-abortion and anti-trans rights legislation during her keynote speech at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas.
“The abortion ban is atrocious. Mind your business. Stay out of my body,” she said, while addressing the gathering at the Austin Convention Center.
“There are very regressive laws being passed. They’re taking away the right for young children to have a chance to live authentically as themselves,” Lizzo added during a Q&A. “It’s a violation of human rights. Trans rights are human rights.”
Texas governor Greg Abbott signed an order last month to treat gender-affirmative childcare as child abuse.
Lizzo said she is proud to represent Houston, where she grew up, but not proud to represent Texas politics.
The hip-hop superstar also revealed that a new album is on the way and that she plans to hit the road.
The Detroit-born artist’s TV show “Watch Out for the Big Grrrls” is set to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on March 25.
