Nicki Minaj has come forward in defense of Jesy Nelson, who is facing “blackfishing” accusations.
Former Little Mix singer Nelson has been accused of “blackfishing,” a term that is used to describe someone pretending to be black on social media by using makeup and hair products.
Nelson was accused of “blackfishing” after she released her debut single “Boyz” with Minaj. In the music video, Nelson is seen as being heavily tanned and her hair styled with wigs and braids.
Minaj defended Nelson during an hourlong Instagram Live conversation on Monday, October 11, in which she addressed claims that Little Mix’s Leigh-Anne Pinnock had accused her former bandmate of appropriating Black culture.
“Sweetheart, take them text messages and shove it up your f**king a**,” she said with a fake smile. “Don’t try to come out and ruin anyone. Let her enjoy this time. If you was in this woman’s group and you ain’t taking about this sh** for 10 years, and as soon as you see she got a video come out with Nicki Minaj and Puffy, now you sending the stations text messages and all this shit … print them text messages out, bust your a** open and shove it up your motherf**king a**. And stop trying to hurt people and kill people’s lives and careers. … If you want a solo career, baby girl, just say that.”
Meanwhile, Nelson also took to Instagram to comment on the claims, and credited her tan to a recent holiday in Antigua.
She added, “I personally want to say that my intention was never, ever to offend people of color with this video and my song because like I said, growing up as a young girl, this is the music that I listened to.”
